4 exciting stories!

We've had lots of great things happen over the past month and one pretty scary event, so this blog will be filled with lots of stories!  I'll start with the good stuff first!

  1. My co-workers threw me a FANTASTIC shower on 8/28/11.
  2. I turned 36 weeks on 9/10/11.
  3. My fantastic friends - Carmen, Mauri, & Courtney - threw me a SUPER FUN couples shower on 9/11/11.
  4. We made our first trip to Riverside Hospital Labor & Delivery on 9/11/11.
Work Shower
Meghan, Sue, & Lori threw a fantastic shower for me at Bel Lago in Westerville on Sunday August 28th.  We had such a great time!  They started with giving everyone bows and if you said "baby" you had to give it to the person that catches you.  The one with the most bows at the end of the shower wins!  It was a cute game and now Harper has many adorable bows.  The decorations were great - Meghan created a HARPER sign that is just too cute - it will definitely be used at many birthday parties for the little missy in the future.  Shannon made the most beautiful cake for the shower and it was so yummy.  We had a delicious brunch & we got a lot of great gifts for Harper.  There were so many little things that made it so special.  I was definitely spoiled by my fantastic team!  It was a lot fun to hang out with my co-workers outside of work and they were very generous to us.  Here are some pictures from the fun-filled day!

Couples Shower on 9/11/11:
Carmen, Courtney, & Mauri threw Rudi & I a couples shower on Sunday September 11th.  It was so great to see all of our friends, many of which we haven't seen in a long time!  The boys got a reprieve from the baby shower and were able to watch football and drink beer in their basement, while the ladies caught up and told stories in the kitchen while sipping on wine and champagne!  The food was fantastic and looked like it was catered - they did such a great job with all the finishing touches.  Everyone really enjoyed themselves!  We got so many great gifts.  Many people went in together and got a few of our really big items that are much needed - our stroller, car seat, video monitor, and pack-n-play.  We also got our swing,  play centers, tons of fantastic books, toys, and adorable clothes.  She got her first OSU tutu - too cute!  There were so many great gifts I can't think of them all!  We are really blessed to have so many great friends that were so generous as we start this journey of our life.  We are so thankful for our friends and family who made everything so special for us!  Here are some pictures from the day!

First trip to Riverside Labor & Delivery:
So....the above shower ended with some excitement.  Well, it wasn't exciting, but definitely eventful.  After opening gifts, I headed to the restroom and noticed some blood.  I got my mom and some of the girls that were sitting around my mom and we convened upstairs to evaluate the situation.  After discussion, we decided it was best to contact the doctors office to find out the best thing to do.  They suggested we head to the hospital to get checked out.  It was a very scary moment as you aren't sure what is going on!!  Rudi was not in the loop at first as I didn't want to scare him, but once I got the phone call back that I needed to head to the hospital, he didn't skip a beat to get me in the car.  He was very good and helped keep me calm (and even drove a little faster than normal) :) to get us to the hospital quickly.  One comforting thing was that I could still feel Miss Harper moving around, so I felt a little better knowing she was still active.

We got to the hospital and they checked me out, but weren't sure exactly what was causing the bleeding, so they admitted me to stay overnight.  Luckily the bleeding did stop that night, but they hooked me to an IV and put a monitor on the baby to keep an eye on her heartbeat and my contractions.  It was a long night trying to sleep in an unfamiliar place, uncomfortable being hooked up to all those wires, having to pee every couple hours, having doctors/nurses coming in all the time, etc.  But, we made it and were scheduled for a high risk ultrasound the next morning at 11:15AM.

So, we waited for them to come get us and went downstairs to the maternal fetal unit where a nurse filled us in and gave us the most information we'd received since we got there.  She said they were going to do an ultrasound to determine what caused the bleeding.  They were also going to do in-depth measurements of the baby to determine her weight, etc.  So, we watched the ultrasounds and found out the following:
  • Harper is currently 6 lbs and 1 oz.  Babies gain about a 1/2 a pound per week, so if she goes to 40 weeks, we are going to have an 8 pounder!
  • They also showed us that she has some hair!!  No wonder I have heartburn!!  Too cute.
  • The bad news is that I have what is called Marginal Previa...this means that the placenta is really close to the cervix.  This is what they believe caused the bleeding.  Basically you don't want the placenta to come out before the baby comes out.  As you dilate/contract, the cervix opens and since the placenta is so close to the cervix, this could be VERY bad for both the baby and mama.  For those that don't know, the placenta is the blood supply to the baby through the umbilical cord.  The baby takes a cup and a half of blood from the placenta.  If the placenta keeps/starts bleeding, the baby will lose blood and doesn't have that much to lose.
Therefore, she sent me home from the hospital, but I am on bed rest until the baby arrives.  I am not able to work, clean, cook, go anywhere, etc.  Basically the calmer I am, the calmer everything else will be.  Activity causes contractions and we want Harper to stay in there a bit longer before she blesses us with her presence in this world.  My instructions are that if there is any more bleeding, contractions 5 minutes apart, or my water breaks, I am to get to the hospital immediately and they will take the baby.  I have a doctors appointment tomorrow where I will find out more information, but likely will now schedule a C-section if she doesn't come on her own earlier.  I will keep you all posted on the news I hear tomorrow.

I am doing and feeling great.  I will probably go crazy sitting here doing nothing, but whatever it takes to make sure Harper comes into this world ready and healthy.  I will try to keep myself busy by updating her baby books, reading, watching tv, catching up on my thank you notes, etc. I'll find something to keep me busy for sure!  Family and friends have been great in helping us out already, which is so fantastic and we are so grateful.

We will get through this and look forward to the arrival of our baby girl!!  Feel free to stop by and visit us!  I'll be here ALL DAY and Rudi will be here after work/on the weekends.  Thanks to everyone for EVERYTHING - the gifts, showers, food, support, kind words, prayers, etc.  We can't express how blessed we feel to have so many wonderful people in our lives.  We are truly blessed.

Harper IS my Golden Ticket

It's Britney, :)!
Most of you already saw this photo on Facebook, but it definitely was exciting.  Ashley won tickets through WNCI to dance on stage with Britney Spears during her concert in Cleveland.  She asked me if I would like to go and OF COURSE I SAID YES! :)  When we got there we were waiting for Britney's security team to come and talk to us and tell us all the rules for dancing on stage.  As the two security guards were talking to the guy from Jive records, Ashley notices they turn around and look at my stomach and say "Whoa".  Needless to say, I don't think any pregnant person had won a chance to dance on stage with Britney before!  They called Ashley & I over and told us the rules, then in a very PC way asked if anyone was pregnant...LOL.  Once I said I was pregnant, they said they were going to have to check with their team to see what to do.  They took a picture of our ticket with their phone and advised they'd come find us in our seats once they figured it out, but if I wasn't allowed to dance on stage, they'd compensate me in another way.  Ashley and I had just got to our seats when the two suited men come up to our seats and tell us that Ashley will still be dancing on stage with Britney and that I was going to get to meet her!!  FUN!!!  So...I head off with the security team and go stand in line to meet Britney.  The tank top I bought online couldn't of been more true - Harper really was the Golden Ticket that night!  Fun story and great pictures to share with Harper when she gets bigger!
Britney, Harper, and LA!

Harper's First Baby Shower
On July 31st I had my first baby shower thrown at my mom's house by Shelley & Ashley!  Mom, Ryleigh, and Presley also contributed to a wonderful day!  It was such a nice shower and it was great to see a lot of old friends, we got so many great gifts, and Harper is off to a great start with the things she will need!  They had a great idea to send a blank onesie to each person that was invited.  They were to decorate the onesie and bring it to the shower.  I cannot believe how creative people got!  They are some of the cutest onesies I have ever seen.  They could seriously start a business!  I have attached a couple of pictures below for you to see!!  I'm sure there will be plenty of pictures of Harper in the onesies in the near future!  Thanks Aunt Shelley & Aunt Ashley for a great shower - I had so much fun and we appreciate it so much!

Nana can Paint!
We had set aside the weekend of August 5th to paint Harper's Room.  My mom and I met earlier that week at Lowe's to match and pick out the colors of her room to match her bedding.  Nana came over early that week to get started on the paint as the wall with the stripes needed 48 hours to dry.  She had most of it done before Saturday morning - Thank you SO MUCH!  I found instructions on how to do the stripes on Do It Yourself.com - and I must say WE (well, mainly Nana & Poppy) did REALLY GOOD!  I love how it turned out, love the color, love the stripes, and it matches perfectly!  Now, we just need the bedding, the decorations, the glider chair to arrive, etc.  It is so cool to walk by her room and see it almost completed.  I even washed a bunch of her clothes and blankets last weekend, too and we were able to organize a bit!  It is such a good feeling to have some of that already done - as Rudi said "It definitely makes it more real!"  Here are some photos of the progress and the final product.  I will update more pictures once it is complete with curtains, decorations, etc!
Nana getting a head start on the painting!

Whoa, these were some work!  Thanks goodness my dad showed up to help - we needed his patience and his height!!

The test - pulling off the stripes!!  It's looking great!

Aunt Ashley's contribution - taking out a trash bag.  I told her she needs to work a little harder if she wants to be in the running for "Favorite Aunt" status. :)
The final look is complete!!  And so pretty!!  Love it!!
32 Weeks
Harper is definitely still a very active baby.  She continues to move around A LOT - I think she is building something in there with all her activity!  I am feeling great and we are getting so excited for her arrival.  Pregnancy has been such an amazing experience and we know that parenthood will be even better!
She's getting big!

12 Weeks TO GO!

We are at 28 weeks already!  Wow how time sure does go by fast.  12 weeks to go!  We've done some pretty amazing things since the last blog update.  The coolest thing so far was the 3D/4D ultrasound.  At about 25 weeks we got some AMAZING pictures of Miss Harper Grace.  This place advises you to drink something sugary or eat some fruit in the morning prior to coming to get the baby moving around.  Harper was on sugar overload!  She was moving like a crazy person, but it was SO cool to see her up on the big screen.  They ended up recording 10 minutes of the ultrasound and put it on a CD to music.  Coolest thing ever.  It's been exciting to show our friends & family.  We think she's pretty cute!  You can see some of the pictures for yourself! (Remember, if you click on the photos, you can see them at full-size)

We think she's going to be an athlete.  I know she only weighs about 3 pounds right now, but girl has got some calves!  She should for all that kicking and moving around she is doing in there.  She is definitely very active.  At first, I was really worried about her - thought something was wrong.  Then I read online and got super worried - if they are active in the womb, WATCH OUT & GOOD LUCK when they come out. :)  My mom is snickering right now...

Future Ohio State Kicker?  Gymnast?  Boxer?  She's got a mean 1-2 punch!

Things are definitely moving along.  I can't sit still, so we have finally moved out most of the "stuff" in the computer room minus the big furniture items.  My mom, dad, & Ashley are coming over the weekend of August 5th and we are painting the room.  G-HA Marti was in town this past weekend and was so gracious to get us our rocker at Babies R Us.  We love it.  Luckily, we ordered it in time as it says it can take 10-12 weeks to get here.  Considering we are at about 12 weeks (almost 11!), we got it ordered in enough time IF the baby isn't early!  It will be nice to get the room done and start putting things in place!

We found a babysitter!!  Thanks to Courtney (God love her) she had been mentioning to Delaney's sitter that I was interested if she had an opening.  And thank goodness - she finally had one as one of the older kids is going to pre-school.  I met Brandy, her husband Tony, and their daughter Sierra last week.  I LOVE THEM.  They are all so nice and caring and really love the children in their home.  She has been doing this for about 10 years and has such a great spirit.  I know she takes fantastic care of Delaney and it comforts me to know that Miss Delaney will be looking after Harper every day!  She also lives about 2 miles from our house, so it's super convenient!  Not to mention it's about 1/2 the cost of daycare!  WAHOO!  Rudi and I are going over there on Friday for Rudi to meet them, to hand over the paperwork and deposit, and finalize the deal.  What a HUGE relief!!

I signed Rudi & I up for birthing classes yesterday.  It is a 5-week session at the doctor's office.  I'm looking forward to it.  I have no idea what to expect.  They tell us to bring 2 bedroom pillows and a blanket plus a snack and a drink.  They are 2.5 hours each session.  After the 3rd session, we get to take a tour of the hospital.  I think it will be exciting to do with Rudi and will give us a better idea of what we are getting ready to go through!

We've also started clearing out some extra space for all the new baby items we know are about to invade our home.  Harper has her very own cabinet space now in the kitchen and I've started making room in the pantry, as well.  I can't stop!  It is also really weird to see the bassinet in our bedroom (Courtney let us borrow one - so cute!).  We try to keep reminding each other to enjoy the peace & quiet and normalcy of lives because it is about to change.  But, we are SO excited for what is to come.  It's just crazy to think that this person inside of me will be out soon!!

Lots has been done, but there is still so much to do.  I am so thankful for the showers that I have coming up!  Aunt Ashley & Aunt Shelley are throwing me my first shower next weekend!  I am looking forward to seeing everyone and having a great time!  My wonderful co-workers are giving me a shower on Sunday August 28th, then we have the Couples Shower on September 11th hosted by Courtney, Carmen, & Mauri.  Rudi & I feel so blessed to have so many thoughtful and generous people in our lives to make this moment special!  We can't thank everyone enough and can't wait for everyone to meet Miss Harper Grace!

Last note - my 28 week check-up was on Tuesday July 19th.  Doctor said as she listened to her heartbeat "She's a feisty one!"  She also said I am measuring a week early, but she is not worried about it.  She asked if we were big babies...I was around 7 pounds, but Rudi said he was like 8.5 pounds.  YIKES!  However, she comforted me by saying usually the baby follows the mothers birth weight.  God, let's hope so!!  Now I go to my appointment every 2 weeks and start going every week in September.  She's coming ya'll!

I will update you again at 32 weeks!  But for now, I will leave you with the latest belly pic at 28!  Love to all!

24 Weeks

At 24 weeks pregnant, the baby has grown to over one pound (an estimated 1.3 pounds in total). She is roughly 11.8 inches from the top of her head to her toes - about the size of an ear of corn!  Here is a belly shot!  I'm definitely getting bigger (if you click on the pictures, you can see it actual size)!!

She moves around constantly and she really loves music.  Nana & Poppy got her a lullaby CD that Rudi put on the iPod.  I play it for her with earphones sometimes at night and she moves around like crazy.  Today, Ashley, Dad, & I were at a Jazz & Blues festival and she was dancing!  Everyone got to feel her moving around.  It was fun!

She is definitely already very spoiled and will be the best dressed girl on the block!! Here are some of her outfits she's received from Nana & Poppy, Grandma Marti, and some friends! TOO CUTE!!

Her dad also got her a Cheer Bear - her first stuffed animal.  I love it, especially because we had these as kids!!

We are so excited for little Harper to arrive!  I went with my friend Carmen to Buy Buy Baby, so she could help me register.  It was so difficult to figure out what the heck to get because there are so many options.  She was MORE than helpful and showed me there is a method to the madness.  It was so much fun to go in there with her and actually see what I need, what I don't, what I should get, etc.  We also picked out the bedding, so we can start planning the baby room!  I decided to paint the walls tan and do big, thick stripes the color of the bedding on the main wall that the crib will be in front of.  I will do white accents with curtains, lamps, etc.  My girly touch (I think) is going to be a chandelier!!  We need to start cleaning out the office, so we can start making it her room!  SO FUN!!  Here is the color scheme!

We have a lot to look forward to and it is happening very quickly!  We are looking forward to going to the lake over 4th of July to spend time with the Curl & Evans families & Marti is coming to visit in July, too!  Mom, Shelley, Ashley, & Ryleigh are planning a shower at the end of July!  I think we may paint the baby's room the first or second weekend in August.  Then Court, Carmen, & Mauri are having a couples shower September 11th!  Where is the time going??  I can't believe she is almost here!!  YAY!!

Until next time!!

Baby Girl @ 20 Weeks!

Our 20 week check-up was on Monday May 23rd!  We were so excited as it was the day we were finding out the gender of the baby.  We were 99.9% certain is was a boy.  Probably because Rudi was wishing SO hard for a boy, then the Drano test said it was going to be a boy, then the Chinese Lunar calendar said it was going to be a boy.  Plus, a lot of people guessed boy over girl.  Here is a belly picture of me at 20 weeks.  I swear it's only been a little over a week, but I am already getting bigger and it feels like the baby is taking up every inch of space...good news is the baby is growing!!

The doctors appointment was awesome as Dr. Vanek showed us many photos of the baby as she was checking and measuring.  We got to see it's little lips, the kidneys, the heart beating, etc.  The baby was measuring great and the due date is still as expected - October 8th!  Here you can see some of the photos, too - The top one is the foot, the next the hand, and the last two are of the face.

Dr. Vanek made us turn our heads while she determined the sex of the baby.  As most of you know from the Facebook video, we had the doctors office call our local baker and only tell the baker what it was.  The baker was then told to make a cake with white icing and either pink or blue batter! Well, during the appointment, the baby was being difficult (Rudi mentioned "just like it's mom") and each time she would try and get a peak, the baby would move it's feet over the private area.  The doctor had to shake my stomach around (with a full bladder) about 8 times to finally figure out what it was.  She said she has only been wrong once in 13 years!  After determining the sex, she said she was going to get one more face picture for us.  It was so cute because the baby then put her arms in an X over her face!  Awww...the doctor embarrassed her by checking out her private parts!  Good girl.

Apparently this picture shows that it's a girl. :)  I am glad the doctor knows what she is looking for!  If you want a visual at what you are looking at, you are basically looking at it from her behind.  The arrow is pointing to the "girl" part.  Those two spots on the left hand side are her feet, which she kept putting in front of her area to hide!

For those of you that weren't able to see the video on Facebook, I will attach it below.  It was so fun as Shelley, Rob, Ryleigh, Alex, Presley, & Dylan were in town, Mom, Dad, Ash, Louis, Kathy, Harriett & Rick Evans, and Karen Decker were all over for the big reveal!  We had all just gotten back from dad's retirement reception at State Farm.  It was such a great weekend and great day!  It was awesome to have the two grandpas cut the cake and announce if it was a boy or a girl!  I think the only one disappointed was Alex.  Poor kid is the only boy...he just doesn't know yet how exciting it will be to have his sisters and cousins friends over!  Pick of the litter - and of all ages!!  Lucky kid! It was such a fun way to find out what we were having!  I had waited all day.  From our appointment at 9:15AM to finally cutting the cake around 7:30PM!  We were ready!  It was typical Curl Chaotic, but such a blast and I am so blessed to have so many people there to be a part of it!

Rudi & I went to Buy Buy Baby on Monday.  Oh boy was that overwhelming! There is so much to think about, so much to get!  We made it about a little over an hour in there before we wanted to burst.  We will definitely be making more trips back to check out more things!  And I will definitely be taking one of my mom friends with me the next time to help me pick through the thousands of different items available out there.  For those moms that are reading this...what is one thing you couldn't live without?  ONE.  :)  I'd love to see your input!

Until next time!  Hope you enjoyed the pictures and the video!  This pregnancy has been so much fun and I've enjoyed every minute.  I hope that the rest of the pregnancy AND the labor continue to be this easy (I am sure I probably just jinxed myself somehow, but I'll take my chances!)!

XOXO,
Leigh Ann, Rudi, and Miss Harper Grace!

Shannon & The Drano Test

So, one of my oldest and dearest friends, Shannon (Wilson) Graham - who also happens to be due on the EXACT same day as me - told me about an old wives tale about trying to determine the gender of the baby.  The Drano Test.

First, let's get back to the fact that Shannon and I are due on the same day.  To give you the back story, our moms were pregnant with us at the same time.  I was born July 18, she was born September 25.  Our parents have been great friends for many years as they were all State Farmer's.  Shannon and I were together when we were first born, met a few times over the years, but finally spent our first "real" amount of time together in 8th grade.  We both lived in Bloomington together and hit it off immediately.  We heard our parents went on a camping trip around the time we were both conceived, so we always joke that we were separated at birth, or perhaps, have one of the same parent. LOL.  We have always had crazy things happen to us that is similar...whether it be wearing the same dress to prom (she lived in FL, I lived in OH...we didn't know until we sent pictures), having the exact same color blue eyes, finishing each others sentences, both working for State Farm and often showing up in very similar outfits, etc.  We officially refer to each other as STF...Siamese Twins Forever.  Her first born (Sailor) was due on my birthday, although she was late.  Now, we are due on the EXACT same day.  What are the chances with 365 days in the year???  She has already found out she is having a girl.  Now the joke is, if I have a boy, what are the chances they get married?  Crazier things have happened!!  Here is a picture of us from early high school - LOL.  (For Shannon - Ch Pow Pow!)

Okay, so now for The Drano Test.  Shannon said that you pee in a cup, then you pour Drano Crystals about 1/4 full in the cup.  After the foam and smoke disappears, you end up with Brownish Water (a Girl) or Greenish-Blue Water (a Boy).  I couldn't wait for Rudi to get home to try this out.  He, of course, was skeptical, but super excited with the results.  Here is the picture, so you can see for yourself. We will find out if this works on Monday May 23rd, when we finally find out what we are having!!
